The Driveway

We involved the engineers and estimated driveway pitches based on matching the grade of the house next-door.  We knew we wanted a level yard, so we placed the house and dug the foundation based on all these factors.  It was a delicate balance to strike with inevitable trade-offs.  Ultimately, we landed where we did and the next decision was how wide to make the driveway.  Most builders would have installed a typical two-car wide driveway.  We wanted a width of three cars for the following reasons:

  • The driveway would fit up to 6 cars for more convenient parking for a party with many guests
  • When company arrived in just one car (as is most often the case), there would be room to have them park in the driveway and still allow either of our cars to back out
  • In the winter snow storms, we could give up the third lane of space as an alternative to throwing it up over the wall (or even have it plowed there)

Currently, the driveway is in immaculate condition and fits six minivan size cars comfortably.
