Family Room & Front Entrance

27 x 14 (family room) and 3'6" x 14 (entrance area)

Floors

Wall to Wall carpeting (family room) and Linoleum (entrance area)

1 intercom station, ceiling fan, 2 network jack locations, 2 cable TV locations, 2 pairs of phone jack locations, ceiling fan, recessed lights on dimmer

The Family Room, along with the kitchen, is the most used room in the house. It sports a large footprint of 14’x27’ with open adjacent areas in the hallway and front door foyer to feel even bigger. When visitors enter the home we often get the comment, “wow, this is very spacious”. We intended the open floor plan to allow for several key areas of our everyday living:

  • Kids to run around and have some creative fun with large open spaces

  • The ability to watch kids from the kitchen

  • A sense of family connectedness

  • Space for entertaining large gatherings (we’ve had some great Super bowl parties)

Recessed lights are mounted throughout the room and can be dimmed from three different locations, which is great for watching movies. The large Hunter ceiling fan circulates air for a room this size and helps reduce the need for central air conditioning in the summer, and it can also be controlled from three locations.

The Berber carpeting has a subtle but sleek pattern and is designed to hold up well against high-traffic areas and stains that this room attracts. The padding is thick and durable to accommodate the “rough-housing” between Daddy and the kids, and it has saved many a sore kids’ knees and elbows.
Entertaining

When it’s time to entertain, the Family Room is the place to be. The entertainment center can be set up on the wall next to the stairs and sports several built-in features:

  • Two standard media jacks (cable TV and/or satellite, computer network, phone)
  • Ceiling Speakers (input from stereo system). The ceiling speakers can serve as additional sound for your stereo system, as well as providing main channel sound for your TV or rear channel audio in surround sound configurations.
  • Input to central music system. If you have a stereo with audio-out jacks you can easily set up a feed into the whole-house music system. Combined with a multi-CD player, you can provide hours of background music during your special occasion.

There’s a second media jack set up opposite the entertainment center wall, which is useful for accommodating a phone or computer connection.

Family Room Extension

Size 6' x 12'
Floors Carpeting (same as Family Room)
Wiring 2 phone jacks , 1 network jack, 1 cable TV jack, 1 intercom station
Shelving Over 30’ of 12 to 20” adjustable shelving, both wire and wooden

The Family Room Extension is a relatively small but very flexible space on the first floor. With young kids, we use it as a “walk-in toy box” to keep us from being surrounded by play things in the Family Room. As such, it’s known to us as the Play Room and is configured with many built-in, adjustable shelves. But this space has many options for use, such as:

  • A place for an Exercise bike or other fitness equipment
  • Space for a Foosball table
  • Kids homework area or office area with computer
  • General storage area (we’d recommend adding double bi-fold doors)

It’s “out of the way” yet very much tied into family living. It has a full intercom speaker and media jacks.
