Master Suite

Main Bedroom Area

Size 13' x 14' (main area) 9' x 4' (walk-in closet)
Floors Wall-to-wall carpet
Wiring 2 phone jacks, 1 network jack, 1 cable TV jack, 1 intercom speaker

For the master bedroom we did some things a little “non-traditional” in homes of this size. The design process produced over 10 viable options for the master suite, much of it driven by the positioning of the staircase to the second floor. The main bedroom area is 14 x 15, which easily accommodates our king-size bed, night tables, dresser and bureau. The walk-in closet is 9x4—enough for an “L” shape layout of hanging clothes, which we configured with His and Hers organizing units.

The big decision here was to run the staircase through this room to preserve space for the second floor Family Room (Gathering Area)—the other main option for the staircase. The trade-off, which we're glad we made, allowed more space for family activities on the second floor, and we've taken advantage of it a great deal. We did make use of some of staircase "dead space" by adding a linen closet in the master bedroom.

Master Bath

Size 13' x 13'
Floors Ceramic tile (including lower half of walls)
Wiring 1 intercom station

The master bath, on the other hand, boasts a spacious footprint of 13' x 13’ and includes some of the most “discussed” design requirements in the home. Our goal was to include the following items:

  • Dual sinks with plenty of counter space, bright lighting and a large mirror
  • At least one tall cabinet to serve as an additional linen closet
  • A four-foot wide shower with two opposite seating areas
  • Space on the wall next to the shower for dual towel racks
  • A private toilet room with its own door that had quick and easy access from the bathroom entrance (and its own ventilation)
  • A double-size Jacuzzi
  • At least one large window that did not compromise privacy
  • Wall space to accommodate positioning of the intercom speaker so that it can be heard from any place in the master bath (shower, toilet, Jacuzzi, sink)

With these "simple" objectives in mind, we embarked on what would be the most revised, re-worked, and re-visited room in the house. We did, in fact, achieve all these objectives, and we have the battle scars to prove it! In addition to “all of the above”, we added overhead lighting and ventilation fans in the center of the room, above the shower, and in the toilet room. Additional bright lights were added for the sink and Jacuzzi.

The Jacuzzi is a romantic, two-person hot tub that allows side-by-side or opposite seating. It’s been a welcomed benefit at the end of long days, or on cold winter nights, or after good workouts. We added extra "shelf" space around it for candles, towels, plants, and even a battery-operated TV. You’ll love its myriad of spray jets, including the ones for your lower back and feet. It has a custom-built access panel.  We added an outlet in this panel to accommodate the optional heater, which allows you to fill a tub and keep it heated as long as you want.
